Why your AI agent needs to speak Tamil
Nearly every AI assistant deployed by an Indian business answers in English. Nearly every customer base includes people who did not write in English. That mismatch is quietly expensive, and it is the easiest thing on this list to fix.
People do not switch languages to buy from you
A customer who messages in Tamil and receives a wall of English gets one signal: this business is not for me. They may still buy — or they may go to the competitor who replied in the language they used. In Tirupattur, Vellore, Salem and every district town, that is not an edge case. It is the default.
Tanglish is the real requirement
The interesting part is that customers rarely write in clean Tamil script either. Real messages look like “price enna sir” or “stock iruka?” — Tamil written in English letters, mixed with English words, with spelling nobody standardised. A system that handles only formal Tamil script fails on the majority of actual messages.
This is why generic translation bolted onto an English bot does not work. The agent has to understand the mixed input as it is actually written, and reply in a register that sounds like a person from here, not a textbook.
What changes when the agent is bilingual
- More enquiries survive. People who would have gone quiet keep talking, because replying is no longer effort.
- Qualification gets more accurate. Customers describe what they need more precisely in their own language, so the fields the agent captures are better.
- Your team stops translating. Salespeople stop acting as interpreters for a system that should have understood.
What makes it hard to build well
Three things, in our experience: detecting the language reliably when the message is mixed; replying in a natural register rather than a stiff translation; and knowing when a nuance is beyond the agent and a human should take over. The third is the one people forget, and it is the difference between an agent customers trust and one they route around.
Where we are
The AI assistant inside Sales Daddy greets, qualifies and answers FAQs in English or Tamil, and replies in the language the customer wrote in. It is running on real customer conversations, not in a demo environment — which is also how we know where its limits are.
If your customers write to you in Tamil and get answered in English, that gap is worth closing. See how we build WhatsApp AI agents or talk to our team — in whichever language you prefer.
