Voice AI agents in India: what works today and what doesn't
Voice is the loudest AI category right now, and the demos are genuinely impressive. Demos are also recorded in quiet rooms by people with predictable accents. Indian businesses take calls from noisy streets, on patchy networks, in a mix of languages, from callers who interrupt. Here is our read on voice AI agents for that reality.
Where voice agents genuinely work today
Calls nobody is answering
The strongest case is not replacing your team — it is covering the gap. Missed calls, after-hours calls, calls during a rush. The comparison is not “agent versus your best salesperson”, it is “agent versus a ringing phone”. That bar is easy to clear, and it recovers enquiries you are currently losing entirely.
Short, structured exchanges
Confirming an appointment, taking a callback request, capturing a name and requirement. Anything that fits into a handful of turns and has a clear finish line works well. Long open-ended conversations do not, yet.
Outbound confirmations
Delivery windows, service visit confirmations, payment reminders. Predictable scripts with a small set of expected replies — reliable, and it removes a genuinely tedious job from someone's day.
Where it still struggles
- Code-mixed speech. Callers switch between Tamil and English mid-sentence. Recognition quality varies a lot by language, accent and how much English is mixed in — this is the single biggest variable, and it must be tested on your actual calls.
- Noise. Traffic, shop floors, market backgrounds. Degradation is real and not always graceful.
- Interruption. People talk over each other in real conversation. Handling that naturally is still an unsolved edge.
- Latency. A pause that reads as thoughtful in a demo reads as a dropped call to a customer.
- Emotion. An upset caller needs a person immediately. Detecting that reliably and escalating fast is a design requirement.
How to try it without wasting money
- Test on your own recordings first. Before any build, run the recognition over real calls from your business. If it cannot transcribe your callers, nothing downstream will work.
- Start with missed calls only. Lowest risk, clearest value — you are recovering enquiries currently lost.
- Say it is an AI. Callers work it out anyway, and discovering it after the fact costs you more trust than disclosing it would have.
- Always offer a person. A voice agent with no route to a human is a very expensive way to annoy customers.
- Measure recovered enquiries, not call minutes. The question is whether more real conversations happened, not how many calls the agent handled.
Our honest position
We build voice agents, and we will also tell you when text is the better buy. For most Indian SMBs, a WhatsApp agent gives more value per rupee today: the channel is where customers already are, the technology is more reliable, and the conversation is recorded and searchable by default. Voice is worth doing when the phone is genuinely the primary channel and calls are going unanswered.
That is the test we would apply — and if voice does not clear it for your business, we would rather say so than sell it. Ask us.
